There are two ways to paint on the object: you can either paint directly in
a 3d preview window or by painting into an image map. Either way you are
really just painting onto the image map... the image map has a type which is
planar or cylindrical or spherical or cubic or "UV". It is just a bitmap
whose resolution you can configure to be whatever you want. The faces of
the mesh are pretty much irrelevant to the pixels of the image map, although
you can turn on a grid which will show them as mapped in "uv" space... this
looks rather freaky, though.

Using the "draw directly on 3d object" mode, it would be pretty easy, for
example, to add makeup to a poser face (I don't have poser but I believe it
would be easy).

"paint the object as if it were real, and you had a spraycan in your hand"
describes pretty accurately what they were shooting for.
